Charles is one of the success stories of British Rowing’s Talent ID Program, having been discovered in 2004 when talent testers visited his school.

Charles was not particularly sporty and in fact only completed the ID testing as a punishment for messing around in class.

After just 2 years Charles gained his first GB vest at the 2006 Junior World Championships, where he finished 5th in the Pair’s event.

In 2007 he was selected to row in the Double scull at the U23 World Championships winning the Bronze medal. In 2008 Charles rowed in the British quad that narrowly missed out on Olympic qualification.

However great success came later that year when Charles became U23 World Champion in the Double Sculls event. Charles now trains full time in the GB senior team and is currently a member of the British Quad.

The young British Quad won a number of medals in the 2009 and 2010 world cup series and finished 5th at 2010 World Championships.

At London 2012 the squad finished 5th and made an impressive start to the 2013 World Cup series winning gold.
