Inspiring Others Changing Lives

As a graduate of GB Rowing’s World Class Start, Charles often works with the younger athletes on the scheme, not only does Charles provide inspiration for the developing athletes but also offers sound practical advice on achieving within the sport of rowing. Charles learnt at a young age the importance of balancing training with academic studies having graduated from Reading University with a degree in Psychology. He found that the older athletes in the team helped him and he wants to help others in the same way.

Charles helped in making an impact to young people’s lives and raising aspirations whilst working on the Sporting Champions programme, and is now looking to inspire your audience by sharing his secret of what it takes to be the best you can be!

"Charles was truly inspirational for the young people and had a positive effect on their experience." Ryan Cullum, Cambridgeshire & Peterborough School Games
"Excellent inspiration to young people, very grounded enabling all to relate to him." Sarah Taylor, Berkshire School Games

Charles is one of the success stories of British Rowing’s Talent ID Program, having been discovered in 2004 when talent testers visited his school. Charles was not particularly sporty and in fact only completed the ID testing as a punishment for messing around in class.  After just 2 years Charles gained his first GB vest at the 2006 Junior World Championships, where he finished 5th in the Pair’s event. In 2007 he was selected to row in the Double scull at the U23 World Championships winning the Bronze medal. In 2008 Charles rowed in the British quad that narrowly missed out on Olympic qualification. However great success came later that year when Charles became U23 World Champion in the Double Sculls event. Charles now trains full time in the GB senior team and is currently a member of the British Quad. The young British Quad won a number of medals in the 2009 and 2010 world cup series and finished 5th at 2010 World Championships. At London 2012 the squad finished 5th and made an impressive start to the 2013 World Cup series winning gold.
